It’s the original.

It’s still the best.

It’s Western Sunset decorative rock.

It all started back in the 1940’s when Peter Kiewit launched Tongue River Stone Company to produce railroad ballast for passenger trains as well as heavy manifest trains that traveled across the country. It’s unique variety of colors caught the attention of landscapers throughout the Midwest, and in 1986, Western Sunset decorative rock was born. This year celebrates 31 years of being a family run company. Blaine Phillips continues to prioritize customer service and producing quality construction materials.

Hank Reed, a geologist who eventually became Vice President of Meridian Minerals, worked as a consultant on mineral evaluation for several projects and appraisals in the general vicinity of the Tongue River Stone property, and in all cases clinker (which is commonly called scoria). In his appraisal of Tongue River Stone, he stated, “The products from competitive deposits are generally a more uniform reddish color, not the more desirable varicolored scoria that is mined for decorative use by Tongue River Stone. Also the competitor’s deposits generally produce a larger percentage of slabby rock which tends to break up more readily. As a decorative rock, Tongue River Stone Quarry has the best scoria product that I have seen.”

Along with providing a unique decorative stone, Tongue River Stone also provides spec aggregate material for various applications to highway and building construction contractors.
